What’s your reason for going to school?
Have
you taking out the time to ask yourself this question? I bet your answer will
be to obtain a degree or certificate. This on its own is not bad but to succeed
in the twenty first century you need to pursue education not certificates or
degree. You should aim at becoming a better at what you do and paper
qualification will be added on to you.
Education
goes beyond the four walls of a class room or as it were academics. It is a
holistic transformation of all your faculties; intellectual, emotional and what
have you. Pursue knowledge for the sake of excellence and not for grades or
certificate. Unfortunately, our educational system is heavily skewed towards
certificate “hunt”. It is more of notes, formulas and theorems with no real
life application of these. It’s not unsurprising that most companies train
newly employed graduates on simply tools and skills, which ordinary they should
have learnt while in school, before confirming their employment.
There
is an urgent need to change our orientation from certificate - consciousness to
education-consciousness if we must stand out from the multitude of paper
graduate parading the streets looking for jobs and to compete favourably
globally.
Don’t
only read to pass your exams. Go all the way to understand what you are
studying and appreciate how your new found knowledge could be apply to real
life situation. Pivoting you scholarship on acquiring certificate is
self-destructive. It erodes the culture of reading post exams.
Some steps to
acquiring all round education.
COMPUTER
SKILLS. In
this computer age most students don’t know how to operate simple computer
applications such as MS word, excel and the likes. It is disheartening that
they concentrate heavily on certificate at the expense of necessary skill such
as computer skills. This is particularly important if you are not studying
computer related courses. Do yourself a favour and develop your computer skills
by enrolling for a course in computer appreciation while on holiday or better
still train yourself with your laptop(if you have one). Instead of using your
laptop to watch movies, play games and surf the internet aimlessly while not
use it to learn these computer applications that are pre-installed in your laptop.
Also, you can always get materials from the net to aid you in this regard.
VOLUNTEER YOUR
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS. While on holidays don’t waste your time partying and frolicking
around. This is a great opportunity to educate yourself further on things that
interest you and gain new skills and experience for future job. There are many organizations
searching for interns look for any that suits your interest and apply. You will
be amazed at what you will learn.
READ WIDE. Create the time to
read diverse and varieties of literature. Don’t restrict yourself to just your
area of study. Open up to other issues of life such as politics, family,
spirituality, career, well-being, the world and your hobbies.
Going to school
shouldn’t be based solely on acquiring a certificate rather it is a place to
develop your whole being and properly equip yourself to confront life and its
challenges.
So explore, discover
and make exploits.
