What’s your reason for going to school?



Have you taking out the time to ask yourself this question? I bet your answer will be to obtain a degree or certificate. This on its own is not bad but to succeed in the twenty first century you need to pursue education not certificates or degree. You should aim at becoming a better at what you do and paper qualification will be added on to you.

Education goes beyond the four walls of a class room or as it were academics. It is a holistic transformation of all your faculties; intellectual, emotional and what have you. Pursue knowledge for the sake of excellence and not for grades or certificate. Unfortunately, our educational system is heavily skewed towards certificate “hunt”. It is more of notes, formulas and theorems with no real life application of these. It’s not unsurprising that most companies train newly employed graduates on simply tools and skills, which ordinary they should have learnt while in school, before confirming their employment.

There is an urgent need to change our orientation from certificate - consciousness to education-consciousness if we must stand out from the multitude of paper graduate parading the streets looking for jobs and to compete favourably globally.
Don’t only read to pass your exams. Go all the way to understand what you are studying and appreciate how your new found knowledge could be apply to real life situation. Pivoting you scholarship on acquiring certificate is self-destructive. It erodes the culture of reading post exams.

Some steps to acquiring all round education.


COMPUTER SKILLS. In this computer age most students don’t know how to operate simple computer applications such as MS word, excel and the likes. It is disheartening that they concentrate heavily on certificate at the expense of necessary skill such as computer skills. This is particularly important if you are not studying computer related courses. Do yourself a favour and develop your computer skills by enrolling for a course in computer appreciation while on holiday or better still train yourself with your laptop(if you have one). Instead of using your laptop to watch movies, play games and surf the internet aimlessly while not use it to learn these computer applications that are pre-installed in your laptop. Also, you can always get materials from the net to aid you in this regard.



VOLUNTEER YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS. While on holidays don’t waste your time partying and frolicking around. This is a great opportunity to educate yourself further on things that interest you and gain new skills and experience for future job. There are many organizations searching for interns look for any that suits your interest and apply. You will be amazed at what you will learn.


READ WIDE. Create the time to read diverse and varieties of literature. Don’t restrict yourself to just your area of study. Open up to other issues of life such as politics, family, spirituality, career, well-being, the world and your hobbies.


Going to school shouldn’t be based solely on acquiring a certificate rather it is a place to develop your whole being and properly equip yourself to confront life and its challenges.


So explore, discover and make exploits.
